Can anyone become a saint? If so, are there qualifications? And if there are what criterion qualifies one to be a saint? Can someone make another person a saint? Does someone have to be dead to be a saint? Does a saint have to do something special or unique? Does someone have to perform a miracle in order to be declared a saint?

Is there somewhere we can go to find out the answers to these questions? Since the word ‘saints’ has to do with Christians shouldn’t God have something to say about who are saints? There are 92 verses in the bible that refer to saints!

Let’s read what a few of them have to say.

“Sing praise to the LORD, You saints of His, And give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name” (Psalms 30:4).

*They have to be alive in order to give praise to God! Certainly there are dead saints but they were saints before they died.

“Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His saints” (Psalms 116:15).

After Christ’s resurrection many bodies of the saints arose from their graves! “And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many” (Matthew 27:52). These were saints that had died and were known by those who lived at that time, otherwise no one would have recognized them.

Paul started his epistle to the Romans with, “To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints…” (Romans 1:7). From this Scripture it plainly says in order to be a saint, we have to be called of God! (Emphasis mine throughout)

“For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable” (Romans 11:29).

“For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called” (1Corinthians 1:26).

So God is telling us that we don’t have to be mighty or noble to be a saint, just called of God!

“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,” (Ephesians 1:18).
