Most talk radio shows are dependent upon advertising sales and nothing sells better than angry pit bull talk. New Jersey’s 101.5’s Casey and Rossi call themselves “a couple of Good Fellas in a Jersey state of mind. Gen-X meets the Baby Boomer.” Today, they’re taking on all pit bull breeds, two legged and four legged.
Tracey A. Bradshaw, a proud pit bull owner and advocate wrote a letter to the station complaining about comments made regarding pit bulls and domestic violence.
Bradshaw operates a Facebook page, Pittie Full Events Plus which cited recent commentary from the daytime deejays in regards to domestic violence and pit bulls.
Bradshaw is concerned about "testimony in support of a bill that would allow courts to extend restraining order to family pets, a provision supported by domestic violence groups, animal rights advocates and law enforcement."
She further notes, "nearly three quarters of women with animals at home who enter shelters report that their batterer injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets for revenge or psychological control, according to the American Humane Association."
Casey and Rossi interviewed Bradshaw on today's program, however irreverently, calling her a "nasty and evil woman" for speaking out against domestic violence and abuse.
Bradshaw is organizing a protest of the Trenton radio station which will be attended by the group's friendly and trained pet pit bulls. The dee jays referred to pit bulls as a breed of dog and called the entire 'breed' 'killer dogs'.
After the Bradshaw segment, the duo took a few calls from their mobile listeners. The telephone frenzy which followed made adequate a.m. fodder for the entertainment challenged public. One listener compared pit bulls to wolves and another lady caller kept referring to some nameless pit bull mauling study in Texas. A driver called to complain about fellow motorists who swerved to avoid hitting animals. When a Jersey resident spoke lovingly of his own pit bull and pet Yorkie-poo, he was called 'gay' for owning a Yorkie-poo.
In between phone calls, the pair attempted humor with jokes about children being killed and domestic violence.
Maybe this kind of banter keeps the airwaves busy, but homophobia and child murder just don't tickle the ribcage. The entire episode left more than one listener wondering who the bad guys really are. Casey and Rossi would have their audience believe Ms. Bradshaw is at fault for daring to love her pet pit bull and for working to create a harmonious world for people and animals alike. The thinking person might question the opinions of Casey and Rossi...that is, if a thinking person was even listening in the first place.
