We’ve told you about a couple of the upcoming games and about one of the referees so now it’s time to give you more information about the Jacksonville Giants team and their historic success. This Friday will be the first time that this reporter will have the pleasure of observing the Giants at the Veterans Memorial Arena.
On Saturday Dec. 29th The Jacksonville Giants defeated the Gainesville Heat 187-110 in the Giants second of three away games. This is the Giants second win of their three game road trip which began with the team beating the #11 ranked Albany Shockwave. The Giants have won 5 consecutive games and improve their overall record to 13-1. Jacksonville is currently ranked 2nd in the ABA Power Rankings and looking to regain the #1 spot.
More about ABA’s 3D rules: The ABA's 3D rule is really quite simple, allowing a team to gain an extra point to their basket whenever they score after stealing the ball from the other team. More specifically, the 3D rule is in effect when the offensive team fails to cross half court with possession of the ball. So, the Giants will often put on a “full court press” defense to try and steal the ball and score a 3D basket! If the defense is on, then one additional free throw is given as well. 3 point baskets count as 4.
The Giants, directed by Head Coach Kevin Waters, was established as a fast-breaking energetic team meant to take advantage of the ABA’s 3-D rule. The 3-D rule allows a team that steals the ball before half court to add one point to its point score. For example, if the stealing team makes a two point shot after preventing its opponent from reaching half court, it actually counts as three points on the scoreboard. When the 3-D rule is in effect and a player is fouled, that player has the opportunity at an extra foul shot as well.
The Giants broke their own scoring record on February 4th 2012 by scoring 211 points against the Columbus Riverballers. Regardless of the score, the Giants always play the final quarter of every game as if it were a championship game. It was this approach throughout the regular season that prepared the Giants for the 2012 Championship series against a talented and undefeated opponent. The Giants performance on February 4th earned national media attention in Sports Illustrated magazine.
The Jacksonville Giants are the 2011-2012 ABA Champions. On April 15, 2012 the Giants won the ABA National Championship in St. Petersburg, Florida. They swept the best of three series against the #1 ranked and previously undefeated South Carolina Warriors. The Giants finished the season with a 27-4 record.
The Giants were undefeated during regular season play in 2010-11. The Giants final regular season record was 23-0, but their Cinderella season came to an end in a two-point loss to their division rival, the Gulf Coast Flash, at the Final Four in Texas. See premiere stories Here & Here.
