R.C. Helton is getting closer to home after being in Arizona for some time.
Helton, a East Ridge graduate has been named as the new head football coach at Whitwell at a press conference held at the school.
He replaces Billy Barnhart, who resigned shortly after the season after leading the Tigers to a 5-5 season and narrowly missing the Class 2A playoffs.
"The enthusiasm that coach Helton has displayed in the past weeks and the coaching interview is the type that Whitwell football needs," Whitwell Principal Josh Holtcamp said.
"I am extremely excited about what Coach Helton is bringing to the field as well as what he can bring to the classroom.
"Good days are certainly ahead for Whitwell football."
Helton has served as the head coach at Trevor Browne High School in Phoenix, Arizona since 2011.
"I appreciate the search committee that I assembled and their dedication to the process which ultimately led to my recommendation," Holtcamp said.
The Bruins finished 5-5 in 2013 and improved every year under Helton's steady hand.
In his first season in 2011, the Bruins were winless at 0-10 but improved to 2-8 in 2012 before going 5-5 last season.
After graduating from East Ridge where he played three years as a running back, before he signed with Glendale (AZ) Community College to continue his playing career.
Helton coached at Desert Edge High School in Goodyear, Arizona back in 2007.
He was also the offensive coordinator at Valley Vista (AZ) in 2008 and Sandra Day O'Connor (AZ) in 2009 before becoming the running backs coach at Trevor Browne in 2010.
Currently there are open jobs at Mt. Pleasant, Mt. Juliet Christian, Northeast, Middle Tennessee Christian, Bolivar, Fairley, Chattanooga Central and Jackson Christian as schools currently looking for a head coach.
