MILLINOCKET - The goal for teams that play in eastern Maine class C is to get into the top five in the MPA heal point basketball standings.
The Stearns Minutemen boys team came into action on Wednesday evening seeded 6th in the standings.
The Minutemen cruised to a 61-34 victory over the Mattanawcook Lynx to pick up their 10th win.
Riley Whitney scored 15 points to lead the Minutemen. Marc Morneault had 14 points while Kyle McVey added 12.
Kacey McVey scored eight points, Seth Brown put in seven. Lucas McLain added three points and Ryan Hallett chipped in with two points.
The Minutemen have four games remaining on their schedule and could still finish anywhere from third to ninth in the final standings.
The top five teams avoid a preliminary round game and advance to the quarterfinals at the Bangor Auditorium.
Stearns (10-4) will next play on Friday, January 25th when they travel to Howland for a 6:30 p.m. contest against the Howlers.
The Minutemen have two huge heal point games remaining on the schedule. They host Penquis on January 29th.
Their biggest game remaining may be when they travel to Dexter on February 4th. Dexter is currently the team right ahead of Stearns in the standings.
Freshman Gunner Maxwell led the Lynx with 10 points. Nick Haynes put in seven while Scott Jipson added five points.
Riley Coburn chipped in with four points. Cory Hartford and Brett Crocker scored three points each. Regan Sereyko and Brady Hawkins each hit one foul shot.
Mattanawcook (1-13) will next play on Saturday, January 26th when they host Searsport.
