The BET channel changed up programing on Monday night for a three hour special tribute for the legendary singer Whitney Houston. The late singer died on Saturday night after being found in her hotel room only hours before a pre-Grammy party. The special included Ashanti, a young artist who has been out pitching her new single. Sharing how much Whitney Houston meant to her, Ashanti shared when she first heard the news.
"It's been bittersweet. Obviously I am very excited about my new single and the video and everything going on. When I heard the news about Whitney we were in rehearsals,” said Ashanti. “It was so hard to swallow. It didn't hit everyone yet.”
The fans have been in an uproar over Ashanti’s many stops on Monday talking about Whitney Houston. Blurring the line between giving tribute to a legend and talking about her new single, it had many fans point out her intentions aren’t very clear. Tributes don’t usually mention new music which is exactly what Ashanti has done in every interview on Monday, including her segment on Good Morning America.
Take a look at the video clip of Ashanti on 106 and Park talking about Whitney Houston and check out how she references her music. Is this too commercial for a tribute?
