Whitney Houston’s body was flown to her hometown of Newark, New Jersey for a funeral expected to be as big as the legendary Michael Jackson. Her remains were sent by plane courtesy of filmmaker Tyler Perry.
According to NBC News, her plane touched down at Teterboro Airport just after 10:30 p.m. It reportedly departed from Van Nuys Airport at about 3 p.m. Pacific Time.Los Angeles assistant chief coroner Ed Winter said in a press conference Monday that the security hold placed on information about the high-profile case did not prevent the singer's body from being released to her family.
The Houston family released a statement saying: "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Whitney. This is an unimaginable tragedy and we will miss her terribly. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from her fans and friends. "
Houston's family plans holding a wake Thursday and will have her funeral Friday at Newark's Prudential Center, home of such teams as the New Jersey Devils and temporarily of the New Jersey Nets, a source close to the arena tells NBC New York. The arena seats close to 20,000 for concerts.
The 6 time Grammy-winning singing sensation, 48, was found unconscious underwater in the bathtub of her room at the Beverly Hills Hilton on Saturday. She was staying at the hotel before a pre-Grammys party. The cause of her death has not been determined.
They are planning to do a toxicology test and there will be no announcements until this whole process is complete. A toxicology test can take more than a month.
The world is honoring and remembering Whitney's golden voice, spirit and talents through the Grammys, radio, news, internet and even in her hometown.
Whitney Houston was remembered during a ceremony at the Whitney E. Houston Academy of Creative and Performing Arts in East Orange. Houston attended the school when it was called the Franklin School, the school was later renamed to honor Houston.
