Whitney Houston found dead at 48 on Grammy eve

Gospel and pop diva Whitney Houston was found dead at 48 on the eve of the Grammy Awards, Feb. 11, 2011. Her publicist confirmed the multiple-award-winning singer died to the Associated Press. The cause of death is not yet known.

Whitney Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. PT at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the site of the music industry's prestigious pre-Grammy party. Clive Davis, host of the Grammy party, discovered Houston's body. It was Davis who discovered Houston when she sang with her mother in night clubs around New York City.

Houston had been one of the the music industry's most beloved voices, from the moment she released her first single in February 1985 -- a career that spanned almost 30 years.

The daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, Whitney Houston had strong ties to Nashville's gospel music industry. Houston grew up singing gospel music in church and toured with the Winans gospel group in the summer of 1989. She starred with Denzel Washington in "The Preacher's Wife" in 1996 and she recorded gospel music on the soundtrack album.

Houston's heartbreaking fall from grace was documented on the reality series "Being Bobbi Brown."

In 2009 Whitney Houston released what was to be her comeback album, the gospel influenced "I Look to You," but Houston's voice could no longer support concert appearances.

Houston's uplifting, soaring vocals have cemented her place in music history and in the hearts of her fans.
