The music industry and fans of Whitney Houston are shocked by the news yesterday of her death. She was 48. One of the local radio stations interrupted their music play to make the announcement of her death. Whitney Houston was found dead at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
Whitney Houston resided in Atlanta for many years with her then-husband Bobby Brown. The couple had one daughter, Bobbi Kristina. Her mother Cissy Houston had a successful career singing gospel music and Dionne Warwick was her cousin. Singer Aretha Franklin was her godmother.
On the eve of the Grammys tonight, it is reported that a last-minute tribute will be performed in her honor by Jennifer Hudson and Chaka Khan. Whitney Houston won six Grammys for her music and was planning to attend tonight's show. Whitney branched into movies with the Kevin Coster directed film The Bodyguard. The bestselling soundtrack to that movie had the smash hit "I Will Always Love You" which spent 14 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100. She also starred along with an all-star cast in the movie "Waiting to Excel" and had several songs off that soundtrack.
Despite her battles with substance abuse and stints in rehab, it seemed Whitney Houston was trying to get back on track. She released a new album last year and was interviewed on the Oprah Winfrey Show where she discussed her past troubles and performed songs off the new album. She hit the tour circuit, but the reviews were lukewarm at best and the tour ended before finishing the rest of the dates. Her majestic voice was taking it's toll and it was showing.
The day after this shocking news, we remember the pop diva with the powerful voice and the many dynamic hits she left us to cherish. Rest in peace Whitney!
