Whitney Houston a voice silenced, a star of brillance 1963-2012

Whitney Houston, gone at 48 years old.

Over a decade ago Whitney Houston and her ex-husband, Bobby Brown were frequent visitors to South Florida.  Many won't forget the headlines they made in Broward County.  Back then, people would question, why?  Why would this talented, beautiful young woman be put in this situation?

Today is not the day to look back at those ugly days as the Whitney Houston we all fell in love with, those vocals that brought us to tears, the songs that brought love and meaning to us, especially with Valentine's Day coming up, this will all give us an extra heavy heart.

Whitney Houston grew up with gospel in her heart and love to give.  She was born in Newark, New Jersey, on August 9, 1963, the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston who survives.  Her cousin was Dionne Warwick; her godmother Aretha Franklin.  Whitney Houston is also survived by her daughter Bobbi Kristina.

Though she was always surrounded by the love of her family, there was a period of darkness during her tumultuous marriage to Bobby Brown that lead her down a path of drug abuse that nearly ended her career.

Over the past few years we have witnessed the fall of several celebrities from substance abuse, from Michael Jackson to Amy Winehouse and now Whitney Houston.

What can we learn from this?  What teaching moment can parents have with their teens from this?  Many!  Drugs kill.  Parents that believe it is is "just pot" or he/she is "just having a beer" remember, it is just the beginning!

Don't be a parent in denial.  Substance abuse doesn't start overnight.  Addiction is treatable.  If you suspect your teen is using drugs, do something - don't wait for them to be an adult and your hands are tied.  Be proactive.

Rest in peace Whitney Houston, you will be missed.  God Bless her family, our prayers and thoughts are with her.
