Whitney Houston - A star is gone. Jackson and Sharpton remember her greatness.

Whitney Houston was found dead on February 11 in her guest room at a hotel in Beverly Hills, California.  Al Sharpton called for a National Day of Prayer to be held for her the next day--Abraham Lincoln's birthday and also the day of the 2012 grammy awards.

Sharpton told AllHipHop.com:

“I am stunned at the passing of Whitney Houston whom I have known since the late 1980′s. I have known her mother, the great gospel singer Cissy, and her aunt Dionne Warwick, down through the years, and the world is saddened by this great loss. The morning of the Grammys, the world should pause and pray for the memory of a gifted songbird ”

The prayer service was held at Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles, California, where Sharpton pleaded,  'Don't remember the rumors. Remember the voice God gave this lady.'

“You could feel her as well as you could hear her. Lots of artists can hit notes, but they don’t hit us … (there was) something about Whitney that would reach in you and make you feel.”

“Before you condemn Whitney Houston, realize that all of us have been through ups and downs; but great people are different than just good people. Good people are people who can go up. Great people are people who can go up and fall down and get back up again.”

Whitney's funeral was held on February 18 in Newark, New Jersey.  Governor Chris Christie ordered flags in the state to be flown at half-staff.

Rev. Jesse Jackson was there and said in praise of her,

"She always had the edge. You can tell when some kids have what we call a special anointing. Aretha had that when she was 14. ... Whitney cultivated that and took it to a very high level." Source

After an earlier church service the Sunday before, Jackson was philosophical in regard to Whitney,

“You can’t stop fate, and fate can’t stop faith..You cannot explain the mysteries of death, but you can say that you look at the box score of life. Life is not judged by the home run hit in one inning, nor by the error in another inning, but the box score. When you look at the box score, Whitney is a winner. Her singing, her inspiring people around the world, it’s been a great source of joy and uplift. And so we grieve, and yet we rejoice even in our grieving.”  Source

Indeed gifted, Whitney employed a fabulous rise to stardom because of her exceptional vocal talent and ability to brilliantly perform. It is stunning to first learn that she is the one person who was ever able to chart seven consecutive No. 1 Billboard hits. Now that she is gone, her songs are racing up the charts once again.

We lost a star in Whitney Houston, perhaps lost her a long time ago to the sickening effects of drugs.  May the Lord hold her in His hand where she can never again know the weakness and hopeless addiction suffered here on earth.

R.I.P Whitney Houston.
