As reported by the Wall Street Journal on Aug. 1, a $1.5 million purse will be up for grabs this evening in Saratoga. However, more importantly, a “Win and You’re In” spot into the most prestigious international horse racing year-end event will be decided.

It’s been well documented that Palace Malice will be the horse to beat tonight, according to horse racing oddsmakers. The son of Curlin, who’s trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, comes in riding a four-race win streak, as he looks to remain undefeated in 2014.

The four-year-old colt from Kentucky has a (2013) Kentucky Derby title in his resume along with wins in the following races: Metropolitan Hcp. (Met Mile - G-1), Westchester (G3), New Orleans Hcp. (G2), Gulfstream Park Hcp (G2), Jim Dandy (G2) and others. As detailed in an Aug. 1 Bleacher Report, Palace Malice will be racing out of post position No.5 and is currently listed as a 1/2 favorite to extend his win streak to five races.

If oddsmakers are correct, the biggest threat to his throne is none other than Will Take Charge, who’s the projected runner-up at 3/1 odds. Trained by the legendary D. Wayne Lukas, the son of Unbridled's Song and Take Charge Lady (by Dehere), also has some impressive victories in his resume including: Oaklawn Handicap (G2), Clark Handicap (G1), Pennsylvania Derby (G2), Travers Stakes (G1), Rebel Stakes (G2), and others.

Will Palace Malice prove oddsmakers right by punching his ticket into this year’s Breeders’ Cup with a win at Saratoga tonight, or will Will Take Charge do just that by pulling off the upset? Tune to NBC beginning at 5 p.m. ET to see the Whitney Handicap 2014 unfold live on television or via free live stream.
