Hellroaring Basin to open
Whitefish Mountain Resort announced Thursday that the Montana ski area will open for the season Saturday with a record amount of terrain. Hellroaring Basin will be accessible on opening day for the first time in its 17 years within the resort boundaries. On Friday, the resort’s official report listed a settled snow base of 53 inches at the 6,817-foot summit.
“The snow coverage this year is amazing, and crews have gone above and beyond working additional hours to prepare for what will be remembered as one of our biggest opening days in resort history,” Whitefish Mountain Resort President Dan Graves said. “The only factor keeping us from opening 100 percent is downed timber left from cutting the new North Side runs, and we are one storm away from seeing those covered in snow.”
Season brings new trails
With total skiable terrain of 3,000 acres, Whitefish Mountain Resort is divided into three main sections: Front Side, North Side and Hellroaring Basin. During the past off-season, the resort cleared several new intermediate runs on the North Side as part of the two-phase Flower Point project. A chairlift is scheduled to be installed in the area for the 2014-15 ski season.
