White Sox to call up Tyler Flowers

SI's Jon Heyman is reporting that the White Sox will call up Tyler Flowers when rosters expand tomorrow. To that I say: interesting. (h/t SouthSideSox)

I wouldn't expect Flowers to take too much playing time away from AJ Pierzynski, but I'd bet he'll end up seeing some time instead of Ramon Castro when Pierzynski needs a day off.

It's really not an unexpected move—Flowers is the best hitting prospect in the system and deserved a cup of coffee in the season's final month.

But what will be interesting to see is if this comes as an audition for Flowers in 2010. If the Sox determine that they need to cut more payroll beyond Jim Thome, Jermaine Dye, Jose Contreras, and Octavio Dotel, Pierzynski and the $6.5 million he's owed in 2010 could be an option to trade (although trading Bobby Jenks would be the far more likely move).

Either way, it's cool to see Flowers make the majors just about two months after I had the opportunity to talk with him.
