According to Fox News, on Tuesday, the White House has emailed staffers to inform them that the Obama administration’s latest measure to deal with the sequester is to cut White House tours.
Sequester becomes a reality: Obama announces no deal reached
The Republicans were quick to claim that the move was made in an attempt to make the cuts look more severe than they really have been on the American public.
For one, Republican United States Rep. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota stated that the cancellation of the White House tours is politically motivated. He said it seems childish, as if saying one is going to “take my ball and go home.” Republican Rep. Ted Poe from Texas exclaimed that the people of America have been banned from the people’s house.
In an email from the White House, congressional staffers were informed that the White House tours are cancelled, starting this coming Saturday, due to staff reductions caused by the sequester. The email went on to say that the White House regrets the decision, especially during the popular spring touring season.
Republican members of congress see the measure as a form of pressure on the GOP to resolve the issues that resulted in the sequester which President Obama signed last Friday. Those GOP members also say that the tactics by the White House won’t work.
Other, perhaps more cost-effective cuts include the furlough of thousands of workers and cutting back on U.S. congress members’ foreign travel.
