If it wasn't crazy enough when it was revealed that there was a petition on the White House's "We the People" website, could it be stranger that there has been an official response? If it has been said that our leaders don't have a sense of humor, this should rebuke that statement.
The response was delivered by Paul Shawcross, Chief of the Science and Space branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget. In the document, titled "This Isn’t the Petition Response You’re Looking For", Shawcross lets his geek side show. The full response can be found here where Shawcross points out the reasons the government will not be funding a Death Star.
Arguably the best argument given against the petition is "Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?" This is just one of the many references to the world created by George Lucas.
It goes to show that the Star Wars franchise will forever be part of pop culture. With Episode VII in the works at Disney, the franchise will continue.
