Yesterday, President Obama's staff revealed the true identity of a national security official who was anonymously tweeting comments critical of the administration from inside the White House. The staffer was fired.
Jofi Joseph, tweeting under the handle @natsecwonk, wrote posts like: "I'm a fan of Obama, but his continuing reliance and dependence upon a vacuous cipher like Valerie Jarrett concerns me."
Joseph often used his social media account to target Republicans, blasting: "So when will someone do us the favor of getting rid of Sarah Palin and the rest of her white trash family? What utter useless garbage..."
The Daily Beast, which first broke the story, noted that Joseph "has also worked at the State Department and on Capitol Hill for Senators Bob Casey (D-Pa.) and (Vice President) Joe Biden. Until recently, he was part of the administration's team working on negotiations with Iran."
Joseph used his Twitter alter-ego to take potshots at members of the media over a variety of errors, both large and small. Many of his posts are targeting reporters with spelling and grammatical corrections. Many more consist of snarky comments about his own life and feelings about various public officials.
- @NatSecWonk: “Was Huma Abedin wearing beer goggles the night she met Anthony Wiener? Almost as bad a pairing as Samantha Powers and Cass Sunstein ....”
- @NatSecWonk: "Thanks. I would have to say that high quality weed keeps me going on tough days."
- @NatSecWonk: "Don't we all agree now that Valerie Plame and her bloviating husband Joe Wilson are a couple addicted to attention and vanity?"
“His humor was always, always, very clever – never malicious,” claimed Joseph's high school religion teacher, Russell Gallas, in an interview with mLive. “The things that he tweeted, from one perspective, are not malicious. … From another perspective, they’re not complimentary.”
