White House claims ICE freed immigrant inmates without it

The White House press secretary alleged Wednesday that ICE decided to release hundreds of undocumented immigrants from detention centers without any White House involvement, but Texas Republican congressman is demanding answers.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said the decision was made by Immigration and Customs Enforcement "without any input from the White House."

ICE made the decision "as a result of fiscal uncertainty" over automatic spending cuts to take effect March 1 if Congress and President Obama fail to reach a deal on a federal budget, according to Carney.

Obama is trying to raise taxes on the wealthy but the Republicans oppose this.

Wednesday, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rep. Michael McCaul sent a letter to ICE Director John Morton demanding that the total number of people be released, where they were before released and the specific reason why each of them was deemed releasable.
