A white greeters only email sent to members of Freedom House Church in north Charlotte is getting a huge backlash. Time reports Sept. 3 that the church has since apologized for the email.
The white greeters only email was sent out by Makeda Pennycooke -- the church’s executive pastor of operations. She asked volunteers that “only white people” greet worshippers at church services over the next few weeks since they expect more visitors. It was an image issue due to the fact that the email further read “first impressions matter" and that Freedom House Church “the best of the best on the front doors.”
One of the many shocking things about that email is the fact Pennycooke is a black woman. Senior pastors Troy and Penny Maxwell are white. When a church member received the white greeters only email, it was reported to a local news station.
Freedom House is known as a diverse church, but their email was insulting to those of other races.
“The email was sent by one of our longtime pastors in an attempt to emphasize that our greeting team reflect the racial diversity of our entire congregation,” a church spokesperson wrote in a statement. “However, she admitted it was a mistake to over-emphasize any specific group and sent an apology email within 24 hours of the original email going out.”
This is certainly a revolting message to all races that any church would discriminate on having white greeters only at their front doors.
