White greeters only, this was the message that a North Carolina pastor sent in an email to the parishioners of her church. Pastor Makeda Pennycooke, who is African American, made the statement that she wants only “the best of the best on the front doors.” Apparently she thinks that by having white greeters only this will draw more people into the church, according to her email.
According to Fox News on Sept. 3, this email dropped jaws and caused an uproar among the church-goers of the Freedom House Church. Pennycooke explained herself in the email:
"We are continuing to work to bring our racial demographic pendulum back to mid-line," she wrote. "So we would like to ask that only white people be on the front doors."
One of the parishioners, Carmen Thomas put it so elegantly when she said:
"You can put a white face all over the front door. But when you come through those doors, you're going to see African Americans, you're gonna see Asians. You're going to see people of color."
This is no joke, this isn’t the case of someone hacking into the pastor’s computer and sending this request out for white greeters only. A spokeswoman told the media that it was indeed Pastor Pennycooke that sent the email request to her congregation. This was her idea of making a good first impression, because "first impressions matter" she said in her email.
It is rather sad when you think about it. This woman who has devoted her life to religion, but she's still thinking in a very skewed way. Apparently she actually thinks that by putting white people only as greeters at the door, this is putting their best face forward to the world.
A spokesperson from the church appeared to attempt some damage control by sending out a statement:
"The e-mail was sent by one of our longtime pastors in an attempt to emphasize that our greeting team reflect the racial diversity of our entire congregation," a statement sent to WBTV read. "However, she admitted it was a mistake to over-emphasize any specific group and sent an apology e-mail within 24 hours of the original email going out."
