Pitch, Hit and Run, an official skills competition of Major League Baseball, is sure to be one of the highlights of Lexington Legends opening weekend. Scheduled for Saturday, April 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, the event is open to boys and girls ages 7-14 (four age groups: 7/8, 9/10, 11/12 and 13/14). Participation is free.
This local event is the first of four possible levels of the Aquafina Major League baseball Pitch, Hit and Run Competition. Boys and girls will play separately for a chance to advance to a sectional round in mid-May. Round three takes place at all 30 Major League ballparks where kids will display their skills for a chance to advance to the National finals, which will take place during the MLB All-Star game festivities. Not only do finalists win an all-expense paid trip to the 2011 All-Star game in Phoenix to compete for the title on July 11, but they get to shag fly balls during the always popular Home Run Derby.
Kids in each age group with the best score in four different events (pitching, hitting, running and overall) receive awards in addition to the opportunity to compete in Burlington, Ky. at the sectionals. Every participant also will be given a ticket voucher to the Legends game against the Charleston RiverDogs at 7:05. Winners will be honored on the field prior to the game.
Pre-registration is encouraged, since only 100 children can participate. A birth certificate is required.
