102.1 KPRI hosted a unique and intimate private listener concert aboard one of the Hornblower’s largest ships, the Inspiration on Thursday, June 5. The headlining performer was the quickly rising band out of Athens, GA, the Whigs. The cruising concert started at roughly 7:30 PM and coasted around the beautiful San Diego Bay during sunset rocking the at max capacity audience. Although the breeze off the ocean was chilly as the sun was setting, the private listeners gathered around the band on the ship’s top deck and danced to the American Rock/ Garage Band style melodies. The Whigs, who have recently released their fifth studio album, are a three man band who are no strangers to hit music. The band has appeared on several late night shows and also played with some big names, such as the Black Keys and Kings of Leon. The private listener show was a treat for all who were able to attend. The mix of old album hits and newly released songs kept the audience guessing and a second to last set of a David Bowie hit had the crowds dancing and bouncing as the ship pulled in to dock. The energy of this show was a thriving, pulsing beat that ran through all present that was drummed out by the Whigs. This band is certainly one to keep an eye and ear on and catch before ticket prices, like their careers, soar.
