Whidbey Cupcakes is a family business
Ann and Lyle Spink moved to their home on Whidbey Island in 1994, filling a dream to find a more family-friendly place to raise their children. Daughters Jana and Krista stayed on Whidbey after they were grown.
When Jana was recovering from back injuries and realized she could no longer continue as a registered nurse, she returned to her lifetime passion: cupcakes. Jana pulled together her mom and younger sister, Krista, and the three decided they could create a business: Whidbey Cupcakes, with Ann as the owner and CEO. Jana decided to follow other pursuits, but her mom and sister have continued to grow the business, and it is thriving.
Krista, is the main decorator and organizer. Ann does the baking, as well as helping with the frosting and decorating. They bake in their homes for the local farmer’s markets and special orders, but they hope to move to a commercial kitchen soon.
Sales are booming
Sales have been great so far because as Ann notes: “Cupcakes are sooooo huge now, in Seattle and all over the US; it’s the right time for a cupcake bakery here on Whidbey Island!! People seem to be so happy with what we’re doing!”
So far, Whidbey Cupcakes have been available at their Langley store, but they are contacting local venues, coffee shops, restaurants and other possible retailers who may want to sell them. They also participate in the Farmer’s Markets when they are open.
Currently, there are 15 to 20 different kinds of cupcakes, plus two or three special flavors each month that reflect a theme or an event. There are holiday cupcakes, and they even make gluten-free and vegan cupcakes for people who have these dietary needs. They also cater weddings, receptions, showers and other special events.
