Super foods that may help people to stop smoking include foods that alkalize the body enough to keep it in balance between acid and alkaline. The trick is to find out what percentages of acid and alkaline represents perfect balance for maximum health for the individual body. You can check out articles such as, "Nutrition kicks the cigarette fix" and "The eight best foods for your heart health."
You may see numerous articles touting rainforest foods such as Maca from the Andes mountains of Peru. What the food has are proteins, tannins, and alkaloids. The point is you're trying to alkalize your body to a specific level that's balanced and healthy for you as an individual in order to stop smoking and add more dense nutrients to your diet. You'll see sites touting Maca as a super food in most health food stores or online. See, "MACA: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions and Warnings - WebMD." But there are plain foods that also can alkalize your body.
Another exotic food said to help you quit smoking is mucuna, known as velvet bean. It's what is called an herbal adaptogen. This Indian herb also known as buffalo beans, is traditionally used with the pod ground into a powder and put into capsules to help regulate dopamine efficiency in the body, according to the Natural news article, "Nutrition kicks the cigarette fix." Mucuna is even known to treat Parkinson's disease, notes that article. Check out the research on the site, "Secrets of Longevity in Humans." Are the sites you're searching also giving you references to validated studies on the results, uses, and health effects of any given product or food? Be sure to check out warnings as well as benefits for any herb, supplement, plant, or spice.
What many of the super foods for quitting smoking sites are saying is to alkalize the body
With the so-called standard Western diet of meat and potatoes, it has been said that your body goes into a type of "metabolic acidosis." But you don't want to alkalize too much. What you do want is balance when it comes to super foods you can easily obtain and afford.
That's where organic fruits and vegetables come in and alkalize. Even rice and wheat, such as pasta make you more acidic. Some nutritionists write that you should stop eating meat, milk, gluten, certain types of fats, corn syrup, and sugar and instead emulsify vegetables and fruit in a blender.
The problem with being out of balance between alkaline and acid means that too much acid leeches calcium and magnesium from your bones and can lead to osteoporosis, kidney stones, and kidney damage. The solution is to eat more vegetables and fruits, but not so much fruit that you're overwhelmed with sugars and fructose excesses.
You're advised to drink filtered water, sometimes spring water, but sometimes spring water is full of bacteria from the runoff of cattle waste and fertilizers. So be careful as to what clean water you're drinking. You could use a filter, reverse osmosis, or other means of getting your water clean. Some scientists tell you never to drink tap water, and other scientists who specialize in water analysis say there's nothing wrong with tap water. So who can you believe?
Even if you take a course in biochemistry, you're not going to get enough input to make decisions on what type of nutrition works best. You'll be told by those selling health food products to buy one item, while scientists who teach at universities may tell you not to believe every claim about health or water products. Be aware when you're vulnerable to buy a product guaranteed to use herbs to get you to stop smoking by changing the chemicals in your brain such as your dopamine response to cravings for nicotine.
Just be aware of the validated, peer-reviewed facts and studies
Do eat the super foods that do claim they are nutrient dense. That's the goal...nutrient dense foods are superfoods. See the video, "Foods to Quit Smoking - Patricia Bannan, RD on Fox News." A Duke University study shows that the foods you eat can help or hinder your efforts to quit smoking.
Also you may wish to check out the articles, "Eating Well As You Get Older - Choose Nutrient-dense Foods" and "The World's Healthiest Foods." You're going to be inundated with consumer magazines telling you which 10 foods or which 6 foods are super foods or some other number. So prepare to question everything and think for yourself. See, "Nutrient Density - Dr. Fuhrman." Check out the nutrient scores on that site.
Nutrient density scoring is not the only factor that determines good health
If you wolf down foods with a high nutrient density score and nothing else, your diet would be too low in fat. Include some foods with lower nutrient density scores (but preferably the healthier ones) to include in your high nutrient diet.
Too many nutrient-dense foods, and you would be eating way too much fiber and not have enough calories for energy. You'd get too thin to be healthy. Don't fall for the adage that you're never too thin. Anexorics are too thin. Maybe you're never too rich, but then, there's always charity to give.
The balance lies in eating the greatest quantity of the foods with the highest micronutrient scores, and lesser amounts of foods with lower scores, explains the nutrient site, "Nutrient Density - Dr. Fuhrman." For more information on the Nutrient Density Line, please refer to the book Eat To Live (2011 edition), pages 118-122. Eating for balance is one way to stop smoking. Check out Dr. Fuhrman's food pyramid website, Nutritarian Food Pyramid. It's based on his principles of the health equation Health = Nutrients / Calories (H=N/C). And it's different than the USDA Food Plate.
