Not a day familiar to most outside of NFL circles but a day dreaded by NFL head coaches not going to the playoffs.
This sunday will be the end of the line for many of these coaches this season. Some will have the opportunity to be a head coach again, while others will move on as co-ordinators within the league or move to the college ranks.
Coaches listed in order of most likely to be fired on Black Monday.
Andy Reid, Philadelphia Eagles
Andy Reid is leaving Philadelphia after this season. The team hasn't performed on the field given the talent level they have. Reid will definitely get another job in the NFL for next season.
Romeo Crennel, Kansas City Chiefs
A disaster of a season for the Chiefs means Crennel will be fired Monday. When you are projected as a playoff team in the preseason then play like the worst team in the league you know your time is up. Crennel will catch on as a defensive co-ordinator elsewhere in the NFL.
Pat Shurmur, Cleveland Browns
With a new owner comes a new regime so look for a complete overhaul in Cleveland. Shurmur will be shown the door in Cleveland minutes after the game is over on sunday. Shurmur will probably get on as a defensive co-ordinator with another NFL team.
Norv Turner, San Diego Chargers
The days of Norv Turner tormenting Chargers fans are over. This team has fallen hard after a 14-2 season not that long ago. Another situation of "what have you done for me lately", Turner will be gone fast when the season concludes. I think Norv will retire from coaching altogether when he is relieved of his duties.
Mike Munchak, Tennessee Titans
Owner Bud Adams has seen enough. The Titans have been embarrassed thoroughly a couple of time this season and don't really look like a team knocking on the door of the playoffs. After 2 disappointing season I see a chance that Munchak gets shown the door.
Ron Rivera, Carolina Panthers
Even with an incredible talent like Cam Newton, the Panthers are no closer to a playoff run than they were years ago. Rivera has to take responsibility for this. After a step back in 2012 there is a chance that Carolina moves on from a defensive minded coaching style.
Rex Ryan, New York Jets
What a mess in New York. Another Jets season in the toilet and the finger pointing will begin. It should start with the head coach and master of this 3 ring circus, Rex Ryan. Between his whining, crying and general pain in the ass to watch at press conferences, I would personally like to see him out of New York and moved to a small market team where he can coach in obscurity.
Chan Gailey, Buffalo Bills
The Bills were expected to do much more this year but it hasn't panned out. Owner Ralph Wilson is a strange old man and only time will tell what he will do with his coaching and management staff. GM Buddy Nix should be the guy to go in Buffalo.
Ken Whisenhunt, Arizona Cardinals
Talk about being dealt a bad hand. The Kevin Kolb trade didn't work out as expected for Whisenhunt. He hasn't had a QB since Warner retired. The Cards defense might be enough to save his job, he's one of the quality coaches in the NFL.
