A cabaret show features live music, comedy or dance routines and is usually performed in nightclubs, bars and restaurants. Although it reached its peak in the early 20th Century, cabaret has been making a come-back of sorts in cities across the United States, including Philadelphia. These days, you can catch a cabaret show in numerous bars across the city. See below on where to go.

L’etage is a live music venue, nightclub, comedy club and cabaret all in one. It has various events each night, including the Martha Graham Cracker Cabaret, which features a live band and a comical drag-cabaret. L’etage has other burlesque and cabaret shows throughout the month, just check its calendar for dates. Located a block from South Street, it sits next to its sister restaurant, the crepe haven Beau Monde. This place has a small French-influenced food menu and a small list of beer, cocktails and wine.

Peek-A-Boo Revue

The Peek-A-Boo Revue has been performing around Philadelphia since 1998. This adults-only neo-burlesque troupe once called The Five Spot its home, but after the club burned down in 2007, the group has been performing at various venues throughout the city. You can catch them at places like the World Café Live (both in Philly and Wilmington), the Trocadero and Underground Arts every month. The troupe also participates in festivals, including the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and the group features an array of singing, dancing and comedy in every show it performs.

The Prince Music Theater opened in 1999 in the heart of Center City during Broad Street’s transformation into the Avenue of the Arts. It presents the city with many concerts, film viewings, theater, opera and cabaret shows. Morgan’s Cabaret features different performers throughout the year and the Black Box venue is set up with round tables for reserved seating. A cocktail hour precedes each show.

Comedy Cabaret features many local and nationally recognized standup comedians at the Ramada Inn in Northeast Philadelphia. It has been recognized as the Best Comedy Club in Philadelphia and has been bringing hilarious acts to the city for more than 30 years. In fact, Jay Leno, Ray Ramano and Bill Maher all have performed at Comedy Cabaret when they were first starting out. Comedy Cabaret also has venues in Bucks County, South Jersey, Levittown and Delaware.

The Bearded Ladies Cabaret

The Bearded Ladies is an experimental cabaret group who dance, sing and act, while using unique props and sometimes dressing in drag. They perform throughout the city and you can catch them at places like the Philadelphia Museum of Art (Art After 5 events), Opera Philadelphia or the Eastern State Penitentiary. This month, they'll be performing at the Wilma Theatre to present stage two of Andy: A Popera, a show based on the life of Andy Warhol and created with a partnership between The Bearded Ladies and Opera Philadelphia. The show will be presented in three different stages within the year.
