Winters is one place close to Sacramento where you can learn specialty farming, including specialty organic produce farming, and classes are starting soon. Check out the website first at the Sacramento Bee December 28, 2011 article, "Learn Specialty Farming."
The school is called the California Farm Academy. And it's a new program of the Center for Land-Based Learning near Winters, is offering beginning farmer training in specialty crop production. You'll learn from established growers such as Sierra Orchards, Farm Fresh To You/Capay Organic, Soil Born Farms and the UC Davis Russell Ranch. The program is part-time but intensive. Classes start on Feb. 16, 2012. (If spots fill up for this session, you will be added to a waiting list for the fall session.) Upon admission, students will be told where to report. Class sites will vary. But it will cost you. The six-month training program is $1,950. If you just want a cooking class for kids to motivate them to eat more citrus fruits and also to cook with citrus fruits, there's an upcoming class on cooking for kids using citrus fruits. See the Sacramento Bee December 28, 2011 article, Potluck: Citrus, for kids.
Lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruit are the subject of cooking classes for children. They'll make sweet and savory concoctions. According to the Sacramento Bee article, each class starts at 3:45 p.m. Ages 3-5 (speak clearly and understands directions) will meet Jan. 6 and Jan. 11. Ages 5-8 (can follow directions with help and supervision) will meet Jan. 13. Ages 8-12 (reads and follows directions, needs help for new ideas and skills) will meet Jan. 20.
The class is in Davis at the Teaching Kitchen, 537 G St., Davis (park in Davis Food Co-op). The cost is $20. For more information, check out the website of the Davis Co-op. There are other classes on cooking at the co-op. And in Sacramento, there are classes in cooking at the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op.
In fact, there's a meeting 6:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 5 to look inside the upcoming class schedule of cooking classes. It's at the Community Learning Center and Cooking School, 1914 Alhambra Blvd., next to the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op. Cost: $5, benefits One Farm at a Time, local farm preservation project. Another cooking course coming up in January 2012 is the basics boot camp, a cooking course offered at the Steel Magnolia Kitchen, 701 16th St., Ste. 130, in Sacramento. At that site, Susann Hadler will help you to get comfortable in the kitchen during these two sessions, Explore tools and techniques as well as cooking terms, shopping tips and menu planning in a hands-on environment. Bring a cutting board, a chef's knife, a paring knife and apron to class.
