Where to find your new best friend

There are several different options when it comes to adopting a new dog into your family. This article will list several breeders and shelters in and around the Arlington area where you can find a Labrador Retriever if you have decided that it is the best breed for you.

Before deciding on a dog, consider if you want a purebred dog or a mix. There are plenty of mixed breed dogs that make great companions and need loving homes, but if you are insistent on a purebred, there are many breed rescues that you can contact in order to give a purebred a second chance.

When looking for a purebred Lab, consider that not all breeders are responsible. Some breed without any background information on their dogs, and they could potentially be passing devastating diseases and disabilities on to puppies that are sold to people just like you, and the unsuspecting owners have to deal with a lifetime of heartache and expensive vet bills as they watch the dog suffer. Some diseases that you should watch for in Labradors are Arthritis, Hip Dysplasia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, certain types of Cancer, and Epilepsy. Don't be afraid to ask around to make sure you are not getting a puppy who comes from a line of dogs who are prone to any of these conditions. Reputable breeders will have no problem telling you what, if any, of these conditions have shown up in their lines, and will help you with understanding pedigrees. You should also ask if the breeder has his or her dogs' eyes, hips, and elbows tested. Reputable breeders will test and clear all of their dogs before breeding them. Beware of breeders who claim to have no problems in their lines or do not seem to be willing to answer your questions. You have the right as a consumer and as an owner to know where your dog comes from if you are buying from a breeder, and you should consider many breeders before making your choice.
