How much do you like to spend on clothes for your grandkids? Heaven knows, you can go from eight bucks for a cute summer dress for a 7-year-old to $100 for a stylish sweater with the kid’s name on it – and on up to the stratosphere. Here's a selection of options to consider.

K-Mart. Yes, believe it or not. If you’ve got the patience to search and the good taste to be discriminating, you can find real bargains all year long at a local K-Mart. Swimwear, dresses and tops for girls, dress-up and rough stuff for boys, jammies and more. My daughter finds the most adorable clothes for her daughter here. They have their site for nice K-Mart online kids’ clothes, too.

Old Navy. Upscale from K-Mart, Old Navy carries girls’ dresses (~$25) and boys’ shorts (~$15). You can come here to make a bit of a fashion statement for your kids. Cute shoes, too. Free shipping on orders over $25 from the Old Navy kids’ clothes online. And free returns!

Once upon a Child, multiple locations. Cash only for gently used kids’ items. This one has more baby and child paraphernalia than clothes, but you can get some good bargains on everything. This is a franchise, so you need to visit the main Once upon a Child website to scout out the one nearest you.

The Second Child, 954 W Armitage Ave. Kids’ clothes and paraphernalia on consignment. Everything from Baby Gap to Ralph Lauren, so the prices will vary accordingly. Visit often, as the merchandise changes regularly and the small space gets jammed on weekends. Take a peek at the Second Child website to learn more and get on their email list.
The Red Balloon, 1940 N. Damen Ave. and 5407 N. Clark St. This store started as children’s furniture but now offers lots of fun stuff in addition to a line of quirky-cute clothes. From girls’ tights ($15) to personalized striped sweaters ($98.95), you can find unique things that not everybody else will be buying. Plus both locations do fun promotional events like Halloween in July (July 12, 12 to 4pm), free ice cream day (July 19, 11 to 2pm), and the Fall Trunk Show (July 21 to August 3). Check out Red Balloon kids’ clothes online.
Psychobaby, 1630 N. Damen. A snazzy place to shop for cool children’s clothes and so on. They’ll customize their T-shirts, hoodies, gift sets, placemats, bibs, and more right in the store. They have rock’n’roll-themed items like T-shirts with the Beatles on them. My friend got her sister’s baby a really cool black onesie with a pattern of skulls & crossbones! Plus the shop puts on regular events for the kids like storybook readings with Nili Yelin and children's music. Visit their vibrant Psychobaby website for more info.
Mini Me, 900 Shops, 900 N. Michigan. The most elite children’s boutique in Chicago, Mini Me caters to parents who want their kids to wear fashionable and stylish clothes and accessories – and are happy to spend the money it takes to make that happen. Featured are fashion, shoes, hair accessories,
jewelry, books, toys and more from the best designers in collections like Petit Bateau, Miss Grant, Oilily, Charabia Paris, Aigle, Bloch, and TroiZenfantS. They have a website but it doesn’t show anything. You need to visit in person!
