Staffers at the Missouri Department of Conservation's Springfield Conservation Nature Center have been preparing for the two-day event that traditionally attracts large crowds. The annual Eagle Days this Saturday and Sunday will see bald eagles cruising above Lake Springfield and along the James River since cold weather arrived. This is an annual part of our Ozarks cultural heritage.
The main building at the Nature Center will host programs featuring Dickerson Park Zoo bald eagle Phoenix and golden eagle Aquila. Center naturalists have reported sighting bald eagles on a regular basis lately, so it's likely eagles will be at the lake. Spotting scopes will be available for viewing the distinctive birds that often perch in trees near the lake, fly overhead and even put on fishing displays. The primary area fro viewing bald eagles will be at the boathouse at Lake Springfield Park.
According to the Department of Conservation release, the unexpected appearance of snowy owls in the Kansas City area has garnered a lot of attention, but bald eagles that fly to Missouri from Canada and the Great Lakes are regular visitors. The number of bald eagles this year appears to be comparable to past years, although the Department doesn't have a specific count. Some have reported seeing two or three while others reported five or six during their viewings.
Do bald eagles and golden eagles visit your area? Will you be out this weekend for Eagle Days? Perhaps we will see you at the Nature Center? Stop by and say Hi!
