Transport yourself to the heart of Brooklyn, New York where artists and musicians from all over the world live to fulfill their dreams. But the “living” (to make ends meet) often gets in the way… The fast-paced environment of NYC demands “success”-- and fast. Living your dream has no barrier IF a fair amount of luck, opportunity, and talent converge. In Brooklyn, musical talent is abundant but where are the opportunities for this talent to shine and achieve recognition? What happened to “real music” in music industry?
In an exclusive interview with an extremely talented musician, we reveal inspiration and clarity. Monvelyno Alexis is the epitome of musical/artistic talent and determination. From Port-au-Prince, Haiti, he arrived in the U.S. to study on full-scholarship at the prestigious Berklee College of Music with solid plans to fulfill his dream of becoming an internationally recognized musician. Since 1986 (at just 10 years old), he has toured over 15 countries with his music, singing in Creole, French, and English. His performances gather more than enough fans to pack the venue, he has produced and composed four original albums, and he is always creating new material. Musicians and fans alike ask the question, “Why aren’t you famous yet?” (Meanwhile, he is paying his band-mates out his own pocket as he markets, produces, and books his own gigs.) “Was the dream of coming to the land of opportunity just an illusion?” he asks. His hope remains with the message, “Create the opportunities, keep refining your craft, and persist”.
Monvelyno has bridged the gap between traditional Haitian roots music, classical jazz, and American pop music with a truly unique sound. Polyrhythmic drumming, exotic guitar scales, and melodic vocals layer each song… The talent is overwhelming but is it too complex for the American listener? According to music industry experts, the average music consumers are teenagers and young adults who focus less on “talent” and more on visual artists that get them dancing. The YouTube-generation wants to be entertained, not necessarily enlightened through music.
So without compromising his true calling as a musician, Monvelyno released a pop album entirely in English (you wouldn’t believe it’s the same guy after listening to his first album, “Kouzen Azakamede”), streamlining his previously intricate structures with catchy hooks and dance-able rhythms. He’s the Eric Clapton of our era – Evolving with the progression of culture. His music videos have gone viral (with 65,000 views and counting) and yet… Where are the record labels in this flurry of musical genius? They are following the Miley Cyrus’ of the “industry” and leading the teenyboppers to value sensationalized “performances” while missing out on the musical talent.
Monvelyno Alexis is the most focused and talented artist of our time. Before the “music industry” discovers him, he will be creating, performing, and persisting; remaining true to himself.
