Early filers may be getting antsy if they haven’t received their income tax refund from the State or Federal Government yet. You can find out if your refund has been processed by visiting the IRS Refund Page or the State of Michigan Refund Page. (For residents outside of Michigan, check your State government website for details). Refunds can come by check or direct deposit into a bank account, depending on how you filed your return.
If you e-filed with the IRS, you can check the status of your refund within 24 hours. If you mailed your return to the IRS, you can check back after 4 weeks. Refunds are typically issued within 21 calendar days of the date the IRS received your tax return. E-filing refunds get processed faster than paper filings.
The State of Michigan Department of Treasury requests you allow 14 days from the time you e-filed, before you input your information to check on the status of your return. If you filed by mail, they request you wait 6 weeks. E-filing is new to the State of Michigan, as of 1-20-13. If you didn’t take advantage of e-filing this year, information is provided here for how to e-File your State of Michigan Tax Return. You can also set up direct deposit for your refund at this link.
