Where Learning Has No Boundaries: MCSD

Starting with the 2014-15 school year, "Bring Your Own Device" Program will take place in the Martin County School District. The School District is increasing digital learning opportunities for students with a District-wide "Bring Your Own Device" ("BYOD") program. Students will be permitted to bring digital devices (seven inches or larger) to school to more effectively utilize Internet resources and increase digital literacy within the curriculum. All school sites will be equipped with Wi-Fi in academic areas to support the use of various types of tablets as well as laptop computers.

While this "BYOD" program is an innovative approach as far as digital learning is concern, the concept is not completely new in public education where for example musical programs such as bands, orchestras, combos, quartets may bring their own musical instruments, especially in cases where the schools have limited quantities of varying instruments to supply all. "BYOD” will be a most fortunate experience for those that have, but a little awkward and unfortunate for those that have not. This is an opportunity for the community to rally to ensure that no child is left without tools for success. Martin County School District’s motto is “Where Learning Has No Boundaries”; let us hope that the schools are in communities where caring has no limits.

February 5, 2014 was Digital Learning Day, a nationwide celebration of the innovative use of technology in education to improve learning and prepare students to succeed in college and careers in the 21st century. The Obama administration recognizing the critical importance of digital learning to our nation’s future, announced over $750 million in private-sector commitments to supply free software, devices, home wireless connectivity and professional development support for teachers. These pledges bring us an important step closer to achieving the President’s ConnectED goal to get ultra-fast Internet connections and educational technology into K-12 classrooms nationwide.

Center for Digital Learning & Policy

Alliance for Excellent Education: The mission of the Alliance for Excellent Education is to promote high school transformation to make it possible for every child to graduate prepared for postsecondary learning and success in life. Vision: The Alliance for Excellent Education envisions a nation where all children graduate from high school with the knowledge and intellectual and social skills necessary for postsecondary learning and success in life.

Although Digital Learning Day is a K-12 activity, the Digital Learning Policy Center implements Digital Learning Day along with taking on an ambitious agenda for national, federal, and state policy reform. As a division of the Alliance for Excellent Education, the Center is a strong proponent of the effective applications of technology in schools. Led by Bob Wise, president of the Alliance and former governor of West Virginia, the Center is based in Washington, DC and seeks to highlight the consequences of inaction and the need for stakeholders to address technology planning in schools systemically.

The work of the Center includes activities, events and efforts including existing projects and expertise in major policy areas, such as deeper learning, linked learning, teacher effectiveness, English language learners and literacy, common core state standards implementation, and assessment/accountability.
