Where is God in 2012?

On New Year’s Day the Drudge Report headline read “Hope the Mayans were wrong!”  But do we need to hope the Mayans were wrong or can we know? And just who are the Mayans anyway? Where is God in 2012 and does He have a plan for December 21st of this year?

The world economy is falling apart. It’s another election year that some call the most important in our lifetime. But are people looking to God or mocking Him? After 9/11 people looked to God until they felt less scared. When the world is falling apart slowly however, or at least not directly falling on top of their head, people look anywhere but to God. Tim Tebow is mocked not because his quarterback style is different but because his faith is not just about thanking God for the wins, when he wins but saying God is a part of daily life. People want God to be there when they deem necessary and how they deem necessary.

I have known about the Mayan 2012 “prophecy” for more than ten years and I’ll admit it is interesting. But the reason most people find it interesting is because it’s something spectacular. That’s what people want, some form of higher power that is obvious. Rather than looking at the details of the Mayans such as their brutal human sacrifices, people marvel at the fact that they knew so much about the stars. It is fascinating but the focus on the winter solstice this year is about people wanting an obvious answer without faith or a relationship with God.

Some supernatural sign doesn’t bring people to a belief in a personal God, it just shows that there is more to the world then we understand. But after one sign how long before people explain it away or forget about it. How often does a sign have to be there? Does the sign have to get bigger each time?

God is not a dictator or some kind of manager of our world. God is much more than some boss in the sky. Of course God could run the world like some kind of politician but God doesn’t want to manage the world. God wants our hearts. God wants people not just to believe He exists but to believe in Him and His love and His plan for us. Believing in God requires finding and accepting the truth. Getting to know God is a journey. This is the answer to life’s greatest mystery.  Why are we here? God created us, He has a plan for us and seeking after Him gives us a better understanding of His plan for us.

God is God, He is the almighty, all knowing, omnipresent, creator of the Heavens and the Earth. He is not simply the promoter of Christian entrepreneurs. He is not a get rich quick scheme.  He is not a set of morals. He is not the father of social justice. His house is not just a place to sing or a place to socialize.

God is there to be found if you seek the truth and seek Him. The Bible says seek and you will find. But if you look for a God to fit your mold rather than finding God, you will find a god that is limited and false.

Is God coming back in 2012? He may! However, you better find God before he finds you. God knows where each of us is but the Bible says He is coming back and for some it will be an hour that is not known and not expected. He will come and judge us. If you wait until he returns it will be too late.

People have thought that the end was near for centuries but the end has not come. Jesus scolded the people for not knowing it was the time for his coming the first time. While Jesus said no one knows the day or hour of His second coming, He did tell us what to look for in Matthew 24. So it seems we may know when the time is near.  People scoff now at the prospect of Jesus coming back. The Bible predicted that near the end people would say “where is the promise of his coming?” Are we in the season of the end or of His coming? You need to do your homework to find out and to be prepared. Will it be Dec 21,2012? No one knows the day, so probably not. This date is only significant because of the thoughts of Mayans about seasons and celestial events.

So what will happen on 12,21,12? It will be the shortest day of the year for 2012, this is what happens on the winter solstice. Could there be other celestial happenings of significance? Possibly, but God did not put the Earth or the Universe in its place to expire in a time frame that we could understand.

If 2012 has any significance, it could be because this is the year that the world’s economies collapsed; it could be because this is the year America changed directions, it could be because it became obvious to those who are looking, that the time we are in is very late. It may be all or none of these things. 2012 will not be the year when the world ended because the Mayan calendar ended.
