As Christmas fast approaches, I decided to shop around for some cool Star Trek gifts for the Trekkies in my life (me included). Although I found some cool mugs, and shirts and bathrobes, I was a bit dismayed at the lack of Trek items out there, pertaining to the movie reboots.
Try as I may, I could not find one tech manual, or Starship Enterprise blueprints based on the new movie. Then it hit me— Where did all the Trek merchandise go. Gone are the walls of book store sections devoted to Trek (maybe because most of the book stores are gone). Gone are the various Star Trek conventions (for the most part, with a few exceptions), replaced by the more popular comic-cons.
There was a time, not long ago, where you'd find various manuals and blueprints a plenty, along with models, action figures and various novels based on the Trek universe. Yes it's true that Star Trek.com has some models and cool merchandise, but the variety pales by comparison to what was out there just a few short years ago.
Is the popularity of Star Trek finally dwindling? If so, it's not a knock on Trek. After all it did have over 40 years of longevity, given the fact that the original series lasted for only 3 seasons. However you'd think with 2 big-budget reboots performing some respectable box office, that Paramount would have given Trekkies all sorts of Trek goodies— stuff for us die-hard fans. Alas I still wait... perhaps for naught.
Is Star Trek's popularity waning? What so you think?
