Ever go into your son or daughters room to find empty dishes and wrappers hidden? Well you are not alone in your journey. More kids sneak food for one reason or another. One of the reasons may be anxiety of peer pressure, especially if your teen is overweight. Another may be they are going through a growing spurt. No they don’t have a tape worm…but if your son or daughter is very active in sports and the like, be prepared to have large amount of food gone. They may sneak it because they don’t want you to get angry because they are always hungry.
Your reaction to this is crucial. Do not go in upset, yelling or crass. Approach the issue in a smooth manner, offer alternatives to junk food, and ask questions. If it is an anxiety issue, offer to help in what is bothering them and let them know that asking for a treat is better. One thing that may help is to stop purchasing snacks altogether and offer alternative healthier treats that they can indulge in.
Don’t forget to reward them for their good behavior. You can try a point system so the reward is a concert, game or clothing item. Never reward them with food; you are basically defeating the purpose. More so acknowledging them for making changes encourages them to want to do more for you. Whether they admit it or not, they still look up to you.
Lastly, Rome wasn't built in a day so be patient with them and yourself!
