Thomas McConnell, who we reported a few weeks ago covered Paul McCartney's song “New” the day it came out, said Oct. 16 his wish came true to be acknowledged by the Beatle. He said McCartney complimented him for his version of the tune Wednesday.
It happened at a taping of the BBC's “6 Music Live at Maida Vale” at which McCartney appeared yesterday in the UK. McConnell, who was chosen to ask Paul a question, told of the exchange between himself and McCartney. He was introduced on the show by presenter Shawn Keaveny.
Shawn Keaveny: “Thomas has got a bit of a story here about a cover he did.”
Thomas McConnell: “Yeah I did a cover of 'New' the day it came out.”
Paul McCartney: “That's you is it?”
Thomas McConnell: “It's me, yeah.”
Paul McCartney: “I heard all about you. Well done, man.”
Thomas McConnell: “Thanks for sharing it. What advice would you give to a young singer/songwriter starting out now?”
Paul McCartney: “Keep doing it, 'cos the more you do it the more you learn, and it really is that. The more experience you get, the more you realize it is what you're doing and hopefully you'll get better, you might not.... no you will, you'll get much better.”
""I can't believe I met Paul," McConnell said. "I especially can't believe he recognized me from the New cover. To think that one of the first people to ever recognize me is a Beatle and my all time hero is insane. It's an actual, real-life dream come true"
McCartney performed “Coming Up,” “Save Us,” “Junior's Farm,” “We Can Work It Out,” Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” and “Get Back” on the show. Clips are available on the BBC's page for the show.
McConnell's version of “New” received a lot of praise from those who saw the video after he posted it on YouTube. That included a comment from McCartney guitarist Brian Ray, who said, “Great job, Thomas! Nice playing, spirit and singing.” The video has received over 25,000 views since is was posted in late September.
COMING UP: McCartney announced Monday he'll play a second show in Osaka, Japan Nov. 11 at Kyocera Dome adding to the previously announced shows there. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. local time Oct. 26. He will sign also CDs at HMV in London this Friday.
