Viewers of the daytime drama, The Young and the Restless, have been waiting literally years for the character Sharon, portrayed by Sharon Case, to be redeemed. “Sharon” was once this troublesome teen who fell in love with the young Nicholas Newman. The two married and Sharon was transformed into this sweet young woman. After her best friend Grace Turner came to town, Sharon became an insecure housewife. And that’s when Sharon’s troubles really began. Her husband cheated. She cheated. Over and over again, Nick and Sharon hurt each other. And finally, after the death of Sharon’s teenaged daughter, Cassie, Nick made the choice to leave his wife of ten years for Phyllis Summers. Sharon spiraled out of control. She eventually married a series of Nick’s relatives, starting with his ex-stepfather, Jack Abbott. She then moved on to his brother, Adam and his father, Victor. She burnt down the Newman ranch. She, at least in her own mind, switched Nick and Phyllis’ daughters’ paternity results. So what’s next?
Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen a stronger, happier Sharon. She rid herself of that awful ghost daughter and she’s back on her medications. Life has been really good for her. Her son and daughter are there for her. Nick is a part of her support system. And she’s developing a bond with Summer, Nick’s daughter. But what’s going to happen when the truth comes out that she actually switched Summer’s paternity results and she really is Nick’s daughter? How will Sharon ever be redeemed?
I’m not sure what direction the writing team will be taking this story in, but as I see it, if they really want to redeem Sharon, then the switching of the paternity results will have had to have been all in her head. The truth will come out via Sharon. She will tell Nick. Nick is going to be severely upset. I mean, this woman messed with his daughter’s life. But at this point, I think somehow it will come out that Sharon didn’t actually switch the results. Perhaps she dreamt it while off of her medications. If she really did switch the results, she’ll never be able to show her face again to the Newman’s, Abbott’s or the Summers’ sisters. Her own son will disown her. How would she come back from that mess?
When Sharon goes to tell Nick what she did (or thinks she did), he’s going to be angry, hurtful, demeaning. He’ll do another DNA test. It will come back with the same results. They will figure out that Sharon imagined that she switched the results. Nick will try to make it up to Sharon after being so hurtful. He’ll find himself drawn to her and falling in love with her once again. Sharon, on the other hand, will realize that she needs more than the same old roller coaster romance she’s had with Nick over the years. Their marriage ended a long time ago. She’ll feel the need to move on, away from the Newman family.
With Sharon’s new job at Jabot, perhaps we’ll see some more changes for Sharon. Maybe she’ll move away from the Newman property to find a new home and a new man are on the horizon. My vote is that the writers push for Sharon Case and Sean Carrigan pairing. I’d love to see a romance blossom with Model Mentor Sharon and the ever so sexy Doctor Rayburn.
As the storyline plays out there is one thing I am absolutely certain of and that is the Young and the Restless will remain as the number one daytime drama for many more years to come.
