When the need for speed and a budget hotel collide in San Diego

The need for speed brings thousands of guests to the Miramar Speed Circuit Indoor Kart Racing Facility in San Diego each year. The quarter-mile asphalt racetrack is considered one of the best indoor tracks in the United States, and was designed by professional racers. Budget-minded out-of-towners hoping to get behind the wheel are in luck -- San Diego offers a number of lodging options, from chain hotels to trendy boutique spots, that are less than 15 miles from the facility and won’t break the bank.

Nearby Comfort
The California Suites Hotel is conveniently located less than 5 miles from the Miramar Speed Circuit and near attractions including Balboa Park, Petco Park and Old Town San Diego. While the hotel is budget-friendly, it still offers amenities that speak to a traveler’s comfort. Before heading out to spend the day speeding around the Miramar Speed Circuit, enjoy free breakfast, or wind down at the end of the day in the hotel’s spa or swimming pool. Guest rooms have kitchenettes, refrigerators and microwaves. Laundry facilities are on site, and high speed Internet is available in every room for a small surcharge.

Prestigious History
Built in 1946, The Lafayette Hotel, less than 10 miles from the Miramar Speed Circuit, is known not only for its historic San Diego charm and atmosphere, but also its much-written about 600,000 gallon Weissmuller pool. In fact, if you are in the area on a regular basis, consider joining their swim club which gets you access to the pool and a 10% discount off of room rates. Among their most budget-friendly rooms are their double queen bed Poolside rooms. Lining the pool, these rooms feature French doors which either open onto a ground floor balcony, or onto your private second-floor balcony. Another lower cost option would be one of the double queen bed rooms in The Manor. Newly renovated, rooms in The Manor bring not only comfort, but history -- rumor has it Bob Hope once stayed there. All guests at the hotel enjoy complimentary parking and high-speed Internet. There is a fitness center on site, as well as two restaurants, should you wish to stay in after a long racing day.

Renovated Convenience
Recently renovated, the Travelodge San Diego Mission Valley in Hotel Circle is a less than 10-mile drive from the Speed Circuit. This comfortable spot offers guests year-around access to their spa and outdoor, heated swimming pool. If you are traveling with a group, poolside cabanas can be reserved for shaded relaxation. Convenient business center and laundry facilities are also on site, as is a full-service restaurant. Rooms range from standard queen or king-bed rooms to two-bedroom suites. In addition, specific rooms are designated as pet friendly, so if you are traveling with Fido, be sure to ask about their availability. Travelodge also has a number of travel discounts in play, including midweek specials, cruise packages and military discounts.

Hip and Trendy
The award-winning Pearl Hotel is a mid-century modern budget boutique hotel which has 23 comfort-focused rooms and is located near the Gaslamp Quarter. Rooms from “The Jewel” to the “The Gem” are built with a modern-vintage feel, invoking a sense of Palm Springs in the Rat Pack era, but with modern amenities like free Wi-Fi and flat panel televisions. While the décor and comfort is alluring, the hotel has become just as enticing for its entertainment -- from fine dining at EAT to movie nights by the pool. The Pearl offers frequent theme-events featuring DJs, specialty cocktails and fine cuisine, and serves as an entertainment alternative to pricier downtown spots.
