When should you replace your mattress? (Video)

There is nothing like crawling into your bed after a long day in the office, with the kids or just because. Your bed is your personal haven against life and the elements. It’s very important to have a mattress that can give you the proper support and comfort that you need (sounds like a relationship). Yet like many things in life – there comes a time when you have to part ways saying goodbye to objects that have served their purpose.

When do we bid adieu to a mattress? What constitutes as “old?” While every person’s experience will vary, there are a few rules of thumb you may want to consider. Just note that sooner or later a new mattress is inevitable as failure to replace may result in an unhealthy environment.

{WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR MATTRESS}

Replace if…

  1. Your mattress is seven years or older. Have you ever heard of the term “the seven year itch?” Well – this has nothing to do with your mattress, but is a common age to say goodbye to your bed. Believe it or not, your mattress accumulates sweat, dead skin cells, bacteria and unwanted creepy crawlers over time. When we don’t replace our mattresses, we allow for these things to fester making potential problems much worse.
  2. You experience discomfort. One must be careful with this as sometimes we forget how firm of a mattress we may have purchased. As your mattress ages it will start to loosen in support possibly lumping up in uneven areas around your bed. The result can cause stiffness, aches and pains.
  3. Shows signs of wear and tear. This may be more obvious to spot than the others. If your mattress has rips, significant dents and stains (watch out – this can lead to bacteria and fungus) beyond repair…you may want to invest in a new mattress. An old mattress with significant signs of wear and tear can lead to discomforts mentioned in sign number two.
