When Pugs meet Dead Animals

See also

Does your Pug run for the feces or dead animals in the yard or on your walk? Not fun especially when you are on your way out to work or to go shopping. What is the fascination that your Pug has on investigating dead animals or feces? Pending the circumstances it could range from just being curious to regaining their territory. Pugs are of the canine breed so their curiosity of the animal whether it is a raccoon, squirrel, rabbit, and so on will get the better of them. It is not good for your Pug to sniff the rotting corpse because of the potential of toxins that are being release from the animal. It is best to get your Pug away from the animal and if in your yard to properly dispose of the animal. If the animal is in a public place if possible call the local animal control or similar in your area to have them clean it up. Some Pugs may even attempt to eat from the animal again it is their canine instinct or possibly your Pug is hungry. If your Pug in hungry one may want to increase food intake or walk your Pug after they have eaten. Finally, a Pug may throw themselves into the dead animal. Throwing themselves into the animal could be the Pug wanting to mark that the area is their area so other animals will keep away. Another reason is because the Pug is trying to hide their “scent”.
Whether your Pug is just sniffing or throwing themselves into the animal it is not healthy for your Pug. The best way to handle this is to be careful where and when you walk or let your Pug out in the yard. Be aware of your surroundings. Another way is to utilize the “leave it” command. The “leave it” command when giving instructs the Pug to do just that leaves what they smell alone. If your Pug was to roll in the animal please take them immediately home and bath them making sure to concentrate in the area which met the animal.
If your Pug ingests or becomes ill after the meeting of a corpse please seek veterinarian care immediately.
