Art has never been more alive. Just witnessed something that will become a lifelong memorable moment of unique temporal and visual sensation. It was a portrait painting live performance by Seth Haverkamp. To set the stage, consider the venue.
There is a little jewel hiding in Falls Church that is "ArtSpace Falls Church", a place or artists and more. Inside is an exquisite gallery produced and managed by Falls Church Arts. There is a theater stage too for performances by Creative Cauldron's Laura Hull, Producing Director of Creative Cauldron - the combination becomes a cultural center.
Ignite the atmosphere with an introduction by Barbara Cram, President of the Falls Church Arts and voila, before your very eyes witness a passionate painting scene set in a classic studio. Seth Haverkamp talks through the painting as if having a personal conversation with himself, as many artists do.
His subject for this painting performance was artist and outreach director (and photography artist) Shaun van Steyn. Sitting as a model for a painter takes discipline too. The brief interaction between the painter and model was entertaining as the painter directed small shifts to capture the light and to steady the expression.
From the audience view, one could see how an oil painter first establishes the painting geometry by applying general dark shapes. Then, the painter works from dark to light, adding and creating detail at every step in the process. That is educational with minimal verbal instruction.
In a couple of hours, about the length of a short play, the portrait took shape to become a finished work. One could appreciate the physical and mental wear and tear as the artist was physically busy and mentally intense.
See the incredible slideshow that records this visual performance.
Seth Haverkamp began studies at the Cleveland Art Institute and concluded at Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tennessee. Seth studied with figure artist, Robert Liberace, and is a member of the Alexandria Art League. What a find and community asset...all of the above.
