When midnight munchies strike: Croque-Monsieur Recipe

After a long night out, all your body craves is some comfort food. Burgers and fries at 12am just seem to go hand in hand. Drive-thru anyone? Fast food is a definite trigger for most of us when our bodies lack energy and need a quick “pick me up”. Fortunately, this sandwich will cure that craving, while providing a nutritious and healthy meal at the same time.
A croque-monsieur is a hot ham and cheese grilled sandwich. It originated in France as a fast-food snack served in cafes and bars. This recipe is my interpretation of this classic French sandwich. The bread is coated both sides with egg whites and crushed cereal for an unexpected crunchy texture, yet wonderful contrast to the rest of the sandwich. The sweet flavor from the jam and the saltiness from the ham complement each other perfectly. So whether you're making this at 7 in the morning or 11 at night, this sandwich will satisfy your belly without weighing you down.

Croque-Monsieur
Serves 1

-2 pieces whole wheat sourdough bread
-1/2 cup crushed cornflakes or any type of crispy cereal
-2 eggs whites
-4 slices thinly sliced ham
-1 slice pepperjack cheese
-1 slice tomato
-2 tablespoon jam

Directions
1. Spread a thin layer of jam on both sides of bread and top with ham, cheese and tomato slices
2. Dredge the sandwich in egg whites and crushed cereal (corn flakes are good) and pan fry until crispy and golden brown on the outside and cheese has melted, about 3 minutes each side
