On Friday, January 22, 2010, the story of the week that still had Washington and America talking was the upset win by Republican Scott Brown in the Massachusetts Senate race. When it came time for ABC News and anchor Diane Sawyer to pick their "Person of the Week," the choice was clear: Michelle Obama!
Yes, once again the media was fawning and praising an Obama over words and not deeds; they are rewarding intent over results. During the week in question, Michelle Obama spoke about the need to address obesity in young children. She outlined no real plans outside of encouraging better eating habits.
Diane Sawyer turned it into a love-fest, almost deifying other past acts of the First Lady. This included speaking of Michelle "reaching out to an 82 year old Queen of England" as if she rescued her from a well. In fact, Obama only laid a hand on the queen, a breach of protocol which most British didn't care for.
Sawyer reverently spoke of Obama's new crusade, wondering how wonderful the world would be if, in a year, kids were noticeably thinner. Of course, First Lady social projects are not new; Laura Bush encouraged reading; Nancy Reagan went after drug use; Hillary Clinton went after interns. No one listened when Nancy Reagan told kids to "just say no." Is Diane Sawyer really so naive to think kids are gonna stop eating junk food because Michelle Obama said so? Of course she isn't, but when given the chance to heap any praise on the Obamas, Sawyer dives right in.
If there was any doubt as to how Sawyer feels about the Obamas, consider what she did when Barack Obama was elected: she fell off the Obama bandwagon, and the sobriety wagon at the same time. Witness a real journalist at work in the classic video below. For Diane Sawyer, her choices for "Person of the Week" hold as much credibility as a shot glass.
