When is Martin Luther King Jr. Day? MLK 2012 January 16, banks, USPS closed

Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year is on January 16, 2012. This celebration of the famous Civil Rights leader is set on the third Monday in January, which is usually close to MLK's January 15 birthday, and is a federal holiday.

If you're traveling around that time, be aware that post offices, banks and all government offices will be closed for this observance. Stores will not close for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but many will have sales, as they do for any holiday, appropriate or not.

Boondockers can also take advantage of dozens of fee-free locations at national parks and national forests. All national parks are taking part in the fee-free observance the weekend of January 14 through 16; however, if you're still in the park on the 17th, fees of up to $25 will come due. Some BLM areas will be offering free camping. (Story continues below.)
