When Howard met Barbra: Streisand and Stern hit it off

You can call it the odd couple or the tale of two Jews…over the weekend Barbra Streisand met Howard Stern and the world is still turning on its axis. This morning on "The Howard Stern Show" on Sirius Radio, the controversial talk show host was waxing eloquently about his encounter with Barbra Streisand at a party. Apparently, the unlikely pair hit it off like gangbusters.

Don't take my word for it. Here's Howard's take: “We really hit it off. It was terrific. We were at a friend’s home -- a mutual friend -- and the friend said ‘Barbra really wants to talk to you. She wants to meet you.’…There was an introduction and we started talking and we sat down and we kept the conversation going for over an hour…a fascinating woman."

The fascination was clearly mutual because Barbra and Howard couldn't stop yapping. They talked about design, decorating — with Barbra likely going on about her book on the subject, "My Passion for Design" — as well as other topics. When the conversation turned to the fact that James Brolin, Barbra's husband of 13 years, had guested on Howard's program in 1999, Barbra was stunned.

According to Howard, “Jim turned to Barbra Streisand and said: ‘Yeah I was on his show.’ And she was like: ‘You were?’ and he said: ‘You know, I used to be famous.’ And she said ‘When?’" At that point, presumably, there were laughs all around.

It wasn't just the conversation that impressed Stern about Streisand. He said that she proved herself to him by being unafraid to speak with him in the first place. "Most famous people don’t want to know me," Howard confessed. "But she was lovely...We sat there. We talked. We measured each others’ noses and that was it."

Howard didn't say whose nose was the winner, but for the two native New Yorkers, members of the tribe, clearly it was a memorable encounter.

Perhaps Barbra should book an appearance on Howard's program next time she's out promoting a project… Like right now for "What Matters Most: Barbra Streisand Sings the Lyrics of Alan & Marilyn Bergman" her new record-setting CD.
