David Friedman knows boats.
He should. He’s been around boats for about 70 years.
Growing up on the east coast, Friedman took his first boat ride as a four-year-old. The attraction never wore off.
Today, Friedman teaches others about boats and boating. He has been teaching classes for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for about 30 years. You can still sign up for his next course, which begins on Tuesday at Fairmont High School.
“I am an avid sailor,” Friedman said. “I started sailing as a young boy. We’d get a row boat, a broomstick, a sheet and an oar and made our own sailboat.”
He is just as experienced with power boats, having raced on a regular basis from the ages of 10 to 17. He has cruised and sailed on the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.
Since moving to Ohio a few years ago, Friedman has been boating at Grand Lake St. Marys and the Ohio River.
Since there isn’t much Friedman doesn’t know, he’s an ideal person to take a Boating Skills and Seamanship class from if you are looking to fulfill requirements for the Ohio State Boater Education certificate or just wanting to brush up on your boating skills.
His course, designed for people 16 years old and older, covers boat handling, safety, rules, communications, navigation and weather. It runs for 13 sessions on Tuesday evenings, 7-9 p.m. Pre-registration is required and the cost for materials is $65 per person. For information or to sign up, call Friedman at (937) 293-4131.

Dayton International Sportsman Show at the Airport Expo Center, March 8-10.
