When God speaks with His presence

I spent this past Sunday morning inside a nuclear magnetic resonance imaging scanner. With my arms secured tightly to my side I laid completely still while a nuclear imaging scanner took over 150 photographs from my waist up. To those who have had an (MRI) you can testify that it can be intimidating. It feels like being loaded into a cannon to be shot off to God knows where.

I turned down my doctor’s offer for medication to keep me “calm” during the procedure. The last thing I wanted was to be high as a kite, unable to move my arms inside a loud machine using a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to take pictures of my internal organs. Once inside I decided to just keep my eyes closed. With my vivid imagination, I did not want to land on the moon or get lost in space.

The interesting thing about that experience is that in the midst of it all the Lord spoke. The noise of the machine, the loud knocking of fear and loneliness at door of my heart could not drown out the still small voice that spoke to my spirit – not in words, but in presence.

"If you seek Him [inquiring for and of Him, craving Him as your soul's first necessity], He will be found by you..." II Chronicles 15:2 What an awesome truth. I sought God and I found Him in my test. He did not alter the events or the results. But God’s Presence calmed me soothed me and assured me that I was just building my resume. I passed the test before I took it. There are some people who are bitter and angry with God, their family and their friends because they believe that they went through a test or trial alone. But the truth is they were never alone. The Lord has shown me once again that I am never alone even if I am only person in the room or tube!

Sometimes in the most frightful and intimidating experiences in a believer's life, God will not say a word. He will just show up and stand watch like a protective father daring the devil to touch His child. Are you facing a test or a trial today? Don’t worry if you have not received “a word” from the Lord. Sometimes God’s Word will be His Presence.
