Once flu season starts, one of the best natural medicines is homemade cough syrup. There are only 3 ingredients but this recipe really works to suppress coughs, fight the flu bug and help you rest.

Cough remedy

It has been used for years with great success. And since it's made from natural ingredients, there is no fear of addiction, synthetic ingredients or taking something that might suppress symptoms so they become a problem years later.

Homemade Cough Syrup

Ingredients:
Raw honey
Lemons
Whiskey, cheapest brand is fine

Directions:

Heat water, add about 2 heaping tablespoons raw honey to an empty, quart size jar, add 1 ½ shots of whiskey and squeeze 1 whole lemon. After water boils, pour into jar, add lid and shake. Drink 1 full cup while warm and keep remainder by the bed for coughs. Children take ¼ cup at first and 1 tsp. every time they cough.

For larger recipes, 16 ounces whiskey, 32 ounces honey, 8 ounces lemon juice and some people put 16 ounces hard peppermint candy. Make in half-gallon or gallon jars for the whole family. This cough remedy stores indefinitely if kept in a cool place.

  • Honey coats the throat, is anti-bacterial and builds the immune system. It can also be used for burns and keeps infection away. It probably does the same for flu outbreak. It draws pus out of wounds and sores.
  • Whiskey works as an anesthetic to the cough response so you can sleep. If you can't sleep, your body can't rejuvenate. Whiskey is also higher in antioxidants than red wine so fights free radicals too.
  • Lemon provides Vitamin C and helps the liver cleanse the body. Lemon is one of the best foods for the liver because it cuts through mucous which often accompanies colds. It is also alkaline once it's ingested which is especially good while fighting flu and coughs.
  • Peppermint flavors the syrup and stops coughing. Spices such as cayenne pepper, ginger and cinnamon can be added for flavor and extra healing. Just make sure they are thoroughly mixed.

This reminds me of the days when I would make up a special concoction for my grandmother, consisting of honey, milk, and some whiskey. It did work to stop her cough.
