When evil serves good, the lesson from Malala Yousafzai

What an amazing little girl. After the horrific injuries she sustained from a Taliban gunshot to the head, the recovery of Mala Yousafzai is not merely a marvel of modern medicine. It is clearly a miracle of healing and she is a living testament to the Lord’s glory and works. The atrocity of her attempted assassination by the Taliban, simply for speaking in support of education for girls in her country, is wickedness in its purest form.

Yet, even after witnessing God’s hand on her, the Taliban has vowed again to finish what they failed to accomplish the first time, which is kill this innocent girl. The Taliban are monsters that shame God’s name. Islam began as a nation that worshipped the one True God of Abraham. God said to Abraham of his son, Ishmael, “I have blessed him… and I will make him a great nation” (Genesis 17:20). What have they become if it is considered a crime for a little girl to want to go to school, punishable of death by firing squad? Long ago Islam allowed God’s Word to be distorted and began worshiping religion instead of God. That has led to violent religious zealots hijacking their faith and controlling their nations.

We must remember that such a thing happened to Christianity as well. In the time of Jesus, the people worshipped religion, not God, and lived by the law, not His Word. That is exactly why the Messiah came to us, to take what had been torn down, that is the path to salvation, and make it passable again. After every miracle Jesus performed, the Jewish Pharisees only became more determined to kill Him. The Pharisees shamed God by preaching and plotting wickedness in His name. Ultimately however, with their evil ways and terrible actions, they were doing God’s will for humanity by fulfilling the New Covenant. How ironic, and beautiful.

Christians must not only understand the tragedy of what Islam has become, but learn from our own history, and fear for what can happen if we don’t remain true to the original source, that is God, not religion. Religion is man made and corruptible. The Spirit is eternal. God’s Word tells us Christ is, “the same yesterday, today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). We must remain truth seekers and speak out boldly against our own false priests, preachers, religious leaders and theologians who would corrupt our faith again.

Worshipping religion leads to war. Worshipping the Spirit leads to life and peace. To all people and nations who know and worship the true God of Abraham, pray for the life and protection of this little girl, Malala, and all innocents around the world just like her. Most importantly, believers can be at rest trusting that the will of the Holy Spirit shall be done. Already, Malala, this little hero of faith and courage, has changed the world as it rallies around her and her cause.

“And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea” (Matthew 18:5-6 KJV).
